If a patient cannot breathe well through their nose, air is not being properly prepared to go into the lungs. The many functions of the nose must be understood and dealt with appropriately when nasal surgery is performed. Nasal function will be discussed, and ways to improve your breathing while maintaining normal functions will be emphasized. Operations to reduce the size of the nose require elevating the nasal skin from the underlying bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage framework is then sculpted to the desired shape, afterwhich the skin is re-draped over the reformed bone and cartilaginous structures. Both reduction in nasal size, as well as enhancement of the under-projecting nose, are common problems which we correct. Operations to increase projection require cartilage grafts. These can cause serious trouble later on such as extrusion and scarring. Using your own living tissues, the nose can be sculptured to its optimal shape with the patient’s goals as the guide.
