Breast Lift or Mastopexy

It seems any surgery related to the breast is typically referred to as breast surgery, breast augmentation, or a boob job. However, there are various surgeries, all which accomplish different things.

A breast lift is a surgical procedure known as a mastopexy, which corrects breasts that are drooping, and restores them to an attractive, natural position.

Drooping or sagging breasts are common, and frequently cause women to be self-critical. This drooping, or ptosis, can occur after child bearing, with the post-partum reduction of glandular tissue, and the relaxation of the suspensory ligaments of the breast. It can also occur following weight loss, and sometimes, it can simply be the result of a patient’s natural development.

Many associate a breast lift with either a breast augmentation, or a breast reduction, and may think the surgeries are synonymous. They aren’t.

While a breast reduction is required for patients with overly large breasts, when the volume is right a breast lift may simply require the removal of excess skin in order to provide a more desirable appearance. A woman may decide to have breast implants inserted at the same time as a breast lift (augmentation/mastopexy) when conditions are right.

To achieve the best results, your plastic surgeon should be thoroughly knowledgeable in anatomical design of the human torso. Accurate positioning of the nipples, avoiding excessive scarring, preserving nipple sensation, and artistic concepts of beauty are all essential to the success of this operation. Mastopexy requires rearrangement of tissues to create the new form. This is surgical sculpture.

Some breast lift procedures can result in the widening, stretching, or puckering of your nipples, or having them end up in the wrong place. These procedures should be avoided.
