EYELID SURGERY
(Blepharoplasty)

Excessive eyelid skin and fat can successfully be removed to improve a patient’s appearance by an operation known as Blepharoplasty.

Patients who have excess eyelid skin and/or fat frequently complain that they look tired, angry, or that their eyelids appear puffy or droopy. Sometimes heavy eyelids are hanging on the lashes, and in extreme cases they can block lateral vision. In patients with excessive fatty upper eyelids this is frequently a familial trait. The lower lids can also have excess wrinkled skin, fat bulges or hanging skin. Carefully performed surgical procedures to correct these problems can make your eyes more attractive, youthful, and less tired.

Eyelid surgery combines removal of excess eyelid skin and excess fat through incisions in natural skin lines so that they are difficult to see. This is meticulous surgery. Care must be taken to avoid removal of too much fat and avoid a sunken appearance. Careful dissection and removal of bulging fat in its various anatomic compartments is essential to successful blepharoplasty. For the amount of fat and skin removed, the patient must depend on accurate measurements as well as the artistic judgement and experience of their surgeon.

The operation properly performed can provide patients a high degree of satisfaction. Healing is rapid; all sutures are removed by 5-6 days. While the changes can appear dramatic to the patient, to others you may simply look like yourself only younger and less tired. The appearance of the upper eyelids relative to the lashes may depend on the position of the eyebrows and sometimes a brow elevation may also be necessary.
