Breast enlargement can be a source of embarrassment and discomfort for men who are so afflicted. The male with large breasts can have them corrected surgically, safely, and expect excellent results. Among the many breast deformities a surgeon encounters, one of the commonest is enlargement of the male breast, or Gynecomastia. This is a condition in which there can be an abnormal response of the male breast glandular tissue to a normal level of circulating hormones. This results in an enlarged disc of breast tissue behind the nipple causing enlarged, frequently painful breasts and protuberant nipples. It is generally an embarrassment to the patient. The definitive treatment is surgery. ![]() The goal of the operation is to create a flat breast area. This can be accomplished through a small incision around the junction of the pigmented area of the nipple and the adjacent skin. A dissection is then made inferiorly until the terminus of the breast tissue is identified; then a dissection beneath the breast tissue, followed by a subcutaneous dissection leaving a small pad of breast tissue under the nipple to ensure its circulation and avoid indentation of the nipple. The perimeter of the cavity is then adjusted with liposuction to make a smooth transition. The disc of dense breast tissue is removed and sent to the pathologist for examination. The operation is predictable and has a high degree of patient satisfaction. When male breast enlargement is caused by excess fatty tissue only, this condition is treated by liposuction followed by elastic compression. This is also a highly successful operation and the results satisfactory for the patient. Following corrective surgery the patient feels more comfortable when taking off his shirt in the locker room, and is less self-conscious when his chest is bare as in the swimming pool or on the beach. ![]() ![]() | |||||
